Attending a network event can be a great way to expand your professional contacts, learn new skills and discover new opportunities. However, it can also be intimidating and stressful if you don’t know how to prepare and what to do. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your next network event. 

Before the event:

  • Research the speaker/s, attendees and topics that will be covered.
  • Identify who you want to talk to and what you want to learn from them.
  • Prepare some questions or conversation starters based on your research.

During the event:

  • Be friendly, confident, and respectful.
  • Smile, introduce yourself and ask open-ended questions.
  • Listen actively and show interest in what others have to say.
  • Avoid dominating the conversation or interrupting others.
  • Exchange business cards or contact information if you have a good rapport. 

After the event:

  • Follow up with the people you met and thank them for their time.
  • Send them a relevant article, a useful resource, or an invitation to connect on social media.
  • Keep in touch with them until you build a strong relationship or find a mutually beneficial opportunity. 

Don’t spam people afterwards. 

Don’t send generic communication to people you have spent time with. 

Don’t let too much time go by before you contact the people you spoke to at the event. 

 In conclusion, attending a network event can be a rewarding experience if you plan, act professionally and follow up effectively. By avoiding some common pitfalls, you can make a positive impression and build lasting connections. Remember, networking is not just about exchanging information, but also about building trust and relationships.
